First time in Tunisia: what to know

Planning your first trip to Tunisia? Start with a realistic itinerary, the right season and a few practical essentials.

How long should you stay?

For a long weekend, focus on Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. With a week, consider adding a coastal destination such as Hammamet or choosing a slower-paced island stay in Djerba. Avoid trying to see the whole country in a few days.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are often pleasant for walking and cultural visits. Summer is popular for beach holidays, although inland and southern areas can become extremely hot. Winter is suitable for city breaks, with more variable weather.

Entry requirements and travel documents

Rules depend on your nationality, travel purpose and length of stay. Check current passport and visa requirements with official government sources before booking. Travel advisories and health guidance can change.

Getting around Tunisia

Depending on your route, compare trains, shared taxis (louages), buses, local taxis and private transfers. Always check current schedules and agree on prices where a meter is not used.

Money and connectivity

Tunisia uses the Tunisian dinar (TND). Carry some cash for small purchases, and check bank fees and local exchange rules. A local SIM or compatible travel eSIM may help with maps and bookings.

Always verify official entry requirements, opening times and local prices before travelling.
